This work is based on the study and characterization of antique mortars in an historic group, using principally petrographic techniques. This methodology allows us to see what materials were used in making the mortars, their state of conservation, and to establish correlations between different examples, previously selected with archaeological and architectonic criteria. A study of these characteristics represents a knowledge base for conservation work and historic heritage restoration. This article takes the example of the Catedral de Santa María de Vitoria-Gasteiz, a study forming part of the Director Plan for the restoration of the cathedral, with the most significant results.
