For some years a series of archaeological investigations have been carried out into medieval incastellamento and, more generally, the defence of the Calabrian Tyrrhenian coast through extensive archaeology (archaeology of architecture, landscape archaeology, computing archaeology). Early results from excavations of the castles of Amantea and Fiumefreddo Bruzio have made it possible to sketch a first impression of the evolution of the fold from the second part of the 11th century, especially in the field of typology and construction techniques, with similar characteristics observed in the rest of the region.
